Polymerases (EC 2.7.7.6/7/19/48/49) are enzymes who play central role in polymerization of of nucleic acids . Although polymerase polymerize new DNA or RNA against an existing DNA or RNA template generally but few can acts in template independent manner also. With the help of other enzymes and proteins, they catalyse the synthesis of a polynucleotide sequence against a nucleotide template strand using base-pairing interactions. So broadly we may categorised them as DNA polymerase and RNA polymerase. As their name show,DNA involve in polymerization of DNA while RNA polymerase functions in polymerization of RNA.
